Crochet Headband: Tutorial

Sweet and Simple Flower Headband
for 17-17.5 in. head (roughly 1-2 years of age)
This pattern can be easily modified for an adult size, but the tutorial I am sharing today is for a small toddler.
Notes:
I have been in the process of creating several styles and patterns for headbands and am excited to be sharing my very first pattern/tutorial with you.
The main thing I wanted to accomplish with this pattern, was to create something that could be adjusted due to yarn stretching out over time. I also didn't want to deal with long ribbons or ties on small children, so I came up with the simple button closure that I think works great for this age group.
If you are just a beginner at crochet, this is a great project because it is super easy and fast to complete.

Terms:
ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
*edc: extended double crochet
flo: front loop only
blo: back loop only

*yo (yarn over), insert hook through stitch, pull through, yo, pull through one loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.

Hook Size: I/5.50 mm
Yarn: Sugar n' Cream 4ply 100% cotton

Headband:
Chain 61 (this should be roughly 17 in. long, but you may need to check your gauge and add or decrease according to the size you want the headband to be)

Sc in ch60 space (or 2nd chain from the end), ch1, skip next stitch, sc in following stitch, ch1, skip next stitch, sc in following stitch (Here you are creating the button holes), sc in next 4 sts.

Ch 40

Sc in remaining 10 st, finishing at the beginning ch.

Finish off, weave in loose ends.

Sew a small button onto opposite side from buttonholes.

Disclaimer: This is not the complete pattern as I found it, but only the part I used.

Ch2

Rnd 1; Work 5 sc in first ch, sl st in front loop only of first sc to join.

Rnd 3: *Ch 2, sl st in blo of next sc; rep from * around ending sl st in first ch-2 sp.

Rnd 4: Work 4 hdc in same ch-2 sp, *(sl st, 4 hdc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around ending sl st into back center st (see Notes) of first petal.

Rnd 5: *Ch 3, sl st into back center st of next petal; rep from * around ending sl st in first ch-3 sp.

Rnd 6: Work (hdc, 4 dc, hdc) in same ch-3 sp, *(sl st, hdc, 4 dc, hdc) in next ch-3 sp; rep from * around ending sl st into back center st of the first petal.
Rnd 7: *Ch 4, sl st into back center st of the next petal; rep from * around ending sl st in first ch-4 sp.
Rnd 8: Work (hdc, 6 edc, hdc) in same ch-4 sp, *(sl st, hdc, 6 edc, hdc) in next ch-4 sp; rep from * around ending sl st into back center st of the first petal.

Finish off. Leave long strand for attaching to headband.

Use strand from flower to weave onto headband, finish off.

And you are done!

Please let me know if you have any questions. Would love to see the finished product if anybody completes this.

Thanks!

  1. Hi Krista! Thanks for posting this tutorial. It's been about 10 years since I last crocheted anything, and I have been anxious to re-learn so I could make some things for Charlotte. I came across your tutorial and thought it seemed like an easy first project :) I was right! The headband turned out super cute (though not nearly as cute as yours!). Here's a link to a few pictures of my little in her new headband:

I didn't do the last couple rounds on the flower since Charlotte is still pretty small, so the flower doesn't look anything like yours (yours is way cuter!). I'm not even sure if I did the first rounds correctly or not. I'm sure I'll try again soon. Thanks again!

  3. What do you mean by work in flo of same stitch?

  4. I don't know why, but I'm stumped when I get to the part where it days Ch 40? Do I chain an additional chain 40? Then it says single chrochet in the remaining 10, 10 of what the new chain 40 or the end of the chain 61? .. I'm an intermediate crochet gal, but this has me stumped.
